Indore’s breakfast culture completely won me over

0

Even before visiting Indore, I knew that Indore was renowned for its food. Poha, jalebi, and the bustling breakfast spots were some of the things that I read about with regard to Indore. Hence, my expectations regarding breakfast in Indore were high right from the beginning. I just did not know that the experience of having breakfast would influence my entire visit to the city.

Breakfast ended up becoming much more than simply a meal in Indore. It helped me to get acquainted with many neighbourhoods that I would not have visited otherwise, as well as the people who lived there and their customs and traditions. Every day, breakfast became a new discovery of Indore’s culture even before the city fully woke up.

Indore’s mornings started much earlier than I expected

The city was energetic even before I stepped out a little after dawn. Breakfast counters were offering fresh food, tea shops were welcoming customers, and neighbourhood streets were being populated by workers, school children, and families starting their day.

Instead of rushing about, there was a sense of energy and organisation in the air. Observing people coming together at known breakfast points made me understand instantly how integral food is to life in Indore.

Every breakfast stop in Indore told a different story

I presumed that breakfast would be all about a few famous dishes only. I discovered that each neighbourhood in the city had its own speciality dishes and traditions of its own.

Once, my breakfast started with soft poha garnished with sev and coriander, while another time, I was served crispy kachoris with chutney. Once again, I found jalebi being cooked fresh to go with my savoury dish. This way, no breakfast was a repeat of the other one.

Walking through Indore’s neighbourhoods became part of the experience

Breakfast inevitably made me venture into other aspects of Indore beyond the tourist hotspots. Most of the known restaurants existed in busy commercial and residential neighbourhoods, thus offering me the chance to view daily life before going to the museums, temples, or markets.

The walk from one food vendor to another offered me historical structures, vibrant shop fronts, busy local markets getting ready for the day, and friendly locals interacting with one another.

Choosing the right stay in Indore made early mornings worthwhile

One of the best decisions I made during my trip was staying in an area that would provide easy access to Indore’s most famous breakfast places. This way, I could get up earlier, experience the region’s local food culture, and sightsee without taking time commuting around the city.

There are quite a few hotels in Indore situated close to Indore’s commercial hubs. Therefore, one can easily visit the traditional breakfast places, local bazaars, Rajwada Palace, Chappan Dukan, and many other places in one day.

Indore’s breakfast culture reflected the city’s welcoming character

What fascinated me most about the food wasn’t only its diversity but also the ambience that came with it. Families sat together at the tables; regulars met old friends, and visitors were treated as nicely as local inhabitants.

There was something very communal about the whole process of these breakfast meetings. One could easily feel like an active part of the city’s life just by joining others at their tables for breakfast.

Final thoughts

When I arrived in Indore, I expected that its history and popular places would make a lasting impression on me. But what made the most lasting impression were the city’s breakfast traditions.

If you plan to come there, start your first day with a leisurely breakfast. Experiencing Indore’s breakfast traditions can add more to your impressions of the city than any well-thought-out schedule ever will.
